Last year I frequently heard people complain. It would actually be fair to say that complaining seemed to be the main form of communication: anywhere from minor griping and bemoaning daily struggles to major dissent and protest. The more I think about it, the more convinced I become that I am a child of the Soviet Union: I am rather proud of having been born in Moscow, I feel violently nostalgic, when I watch old Russian movies and cartoons, I still think that milk cartons can be used as planters, and I am a strong believer in friendship between nations.

Don't even remember how the conversation started, but when trying to remember how long Obama had been in the office the number of years was counted by the number of times he had chosen to say "medz eghern" as opposed to "genocide" on April 24th.

When the internet goes down at work curious discussions unfold.  Today it was yet again on the sorest subjects of all: patriotism, nationalism, genocide, public policy, etc (Why can't we have a typical watercooler conversation about the latest episode of House?).

Lately I have been struggling with my identity. As much as I identified myself as an Armenian in America, here I feel like I stick out like a sore thumb. One of my earlier memories from the good old Soviet days is how we used to line up in front of the old TV (one of these giant dinosaurs, complete with legs and rabbit ear antennae, everything) to watch either Kashpirovski stare at us from the screen or hear Gorbachev wax on about perestroika or the cold war.
